Soha Ali Khan (born Soha Ali Khan Pataudi on 4 October 1978) is a Bollywood actress best known for her role of Sonia in Rang De Basanti (2006) for which she also received awards. She is daughter of veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore.
Early life
Khan was born into the erstwhile princely family of Pataudi. She is from Afghan origin, who has ethnic Pashtun ancestry through her Nawabs-of-Pataudi lineage from her father's side and Bengali Hindu ancestry from her mother's side.[1] Both her father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who died on 22 September 2011[2] was the Nawab, and paternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, are former captains of the Indian cricket team. Her mother, Sharmila Tagore, is a film actress. Her brother Saif Ali Khan is also a Bollywood actor and her sister Saba Ali Khan is a jewellery designer. She attended The British School in New Delhi and read geography at Balliol, Oxford, where her father had studied Arabic and FrenchBalliol College, Oxford and earned a Masters degree in International Relationsfrom the London School of Economics and Political Science.[3] Khan's mother is Sharmila Tagore, a Bengali Indian film actress and a member of Bengal's Tagore family. She is also the head of the Indian film censorship board[4] and the grand-niece of Nobel laureateRabindranath Tagore.[5] Tagore converted to Islam from Hinduism after her marriage to Khan's father, and changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana.[1] Khan spent her childhood in a Muslim atmosphere, reading the Quran, with her grandmother Sajida Sultan, Begum of Bhopal being the centre of her religious education. Khan says that "Religion played a major role in my upbringing."[1] Khan also states that her family is "cool or rather massively open–minded about religious matters.
Career
Before embarking upon her film career, Khan worked for the Ford Foundation and Citibank. She is involved in a range of activities outside the acting world, including serving on the Advisory Board for a new project of the public entrepreneur group, Res Publica. She has also recently modeled for the spring-summer collection of Globus, an Indian chain of boutiques.
Khan made her acting debut with the Bollywood film Dil Maange More (2004), where she shared credits with Shahid Kapoor, Ayesha Takia and Tulip Joshi. She has since received critical acclaim for her performances in the Bengali film Antar Mahal (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006). Khoya Khoya Chand, earned her critical acclaim, although it was not successful at the box office. In 2009, she appeared in 99, which was a critical and commercial success and her performance was acclaimed. Her next release was Tum Mile oppositeEmraan Hashmi. Although a box office failure, Khan received positive reviews for her performance. Her upcoming release include Mumbai Cutting. Khan also hosted a show called Godrej Khelo Jeeto Jiyo on Star Plus.
Controversy
In 2010, an MMS of Khan was shot without her knowledge using a concealed camera while she was in a beauty salon.[8]
In 2012, Khan moved the Gujarat High Court against a company which did not pay her for modeling for its products.
